Reno — Nevada. Like many residents of the Reno-Nevada area, David Calvert enjoys the art of photography along with proving that a picture is worth a thousand words. He is not like most sports photographers, he can throw a pretty good curveball.

David Calvert

David Calvert is a freelance photographer. He photographs the Reno Aces and Reno FC, the new soccer club in Reno, Nevada, and is also an adjunct instructor at the University of Nevada, Reno.

David says he did not have plans to go into photography when he was growing up. He was interested in sports, baseball specifically. Unfortunately, a rotator cuff injury sidelined him from the field.

He went from having a baseball in his hand to having a camera instead, and he never lost a beat. David explains why he enjoys photography so much.

“You get to experience the world in a different way than most people don’t,” Calvert said.

As a freelance photographer, David works for a lot of publications. He explains a very rare opportunity he got from Getty images a few years back to photograph then-President Barack Obama at Yosemite National Park.

“It was the first time I photographed President Obama while he was in office as the president. This was a speech honoring the 150th anniversary of the national parks service. It is still an incredible experience because you are standing there and looking up at Yosemite falls, the presidents in front of you, and it’s iconic. It was my first going to Yosemite. It was a lot of cool memories,” David said.

Calvert gives some advice to young people out there looking to make it in the world of photography. He says photography is similar to practicing sports.

“Muscle memory. I kind of approached it the same way as I approached sports. You’re doing Tee-work, and hitting the ball off the Tee hundreds of times over and over again. You get more comfortable with it over time. I mean it’s something you either are passionate about it, and you dive into it, or, you know, find another career,” Calvert said.
